Otamendi's World Cup Dream: Why He Rejected Saudi Millions for Argentina

Otamendi’s World Cup Ambition
At 36, most defenders would be eyeing retirement or a final payday. Not Nicolas Otamendi. The Benfica captain recently revealed he rejected substantial offers from Saudi Arabia with one clear objective: to represent Argentina at the 2026 World Cup.
“Some people want me to retire, but I keep going,” Otamendi told La Red radio. “For me, criticism is like fuel. That’s why I continue pushing.” His words reflect the mentality that’s kept him competitive at Europe’s top level for 15 seasons.
The Longevity Formula
What makes Otamendi’s ambition remarkable isn’t just his age - it’s his consistent performance metrics:
- 87% tackle success rate in Liga Portugal last season
- Top 5% among European defenders for progressive passes
- Played 90 minutes in 92% of Benfica’s matches
“I’ve seen Argentina’s best and worst moments,” noted the 108-cap veteran. “If I maintain this level, Scaloni knows what I can offer.”
Di Maria’s Homecoming & That Boca Celebration
The interview took several fascinating turns, including Otamendi’s perspective on Angel Di Maria’s emotional return to Rosario Central after 16 years in Europe. “He understands Argentine football despite leaving young,” said Otamendi, before addressing his controversial goal celebration against Boca Juniors - particularly spicy given his River Plate allegiance.
“I celebrated like it was against Brazil,” he grinned. “No disrespect to Boca fans - pure joy at helping my team.”
Messi: The Undisputed GOAT
No conversation with an Argentine player is complete without Lionel Messi commentary. Otamendi didn’t hold back: “He’s the greatest in history. The World Cup brought him peace, but he’ll decide about 2026 when the time comes.”
With South American qualifiers resuming soon, both veterans could yet add another chapter to Argentina’s golden era.
